Randys Donuts

As one of the most famous doughnut shops in America, Randys has been featured in innumerable movies and TV shows, including Iron Man 2, California Girls, and Escape from Petropolis. The building is located at the corner of Manchester and La Cienega Boulevards in Inglewood, California, a few miles from Los Angeles International Airport.

Known in equal parts for its iconic 32-foot-tall doughnut sign and its delicious donuts, Randy’s is one of Los Angeles’ most beloved roadside destinations. It has appeared on many TV shows and in countless movies, and is a must-visit for any trip to Los Angeles.

The restaurant is part of a chain owned by brothers Larry and Ron Weintraub, who maintain the iconic signage with each passing year. It serves the usual array of deep-fried classics, as well as exemplary cinnamon rolls, apple fritters, and bear claws. It’s open 24 hours a day, so it’s a great spot for an after-flight breakfast or a stop during your travels to Los Angeles International Airport.

Its massive doughnut sign is a signature of the style of architecture that emerged in the early 20th century, called programmatic architecture. This trend centered on designing buildings in the shape of products sold in them, and had its heyday in the mid-1920s and 1930s.

But the doughnut sign that adorns the roof of the Randy’s in Inglewood is different from others in this style. While other stores feature a smaller version of the sign atop the building, the 32-foot-tall version sits atop Randy’s in Inglewood. This is the most famous of the colossal donut signs, but they are also found in Bellflower and Reseda, CA.

Inglewood’s Randy’s Donuts is a favorite location for filmmakers who want a backdrop of extreme roadside kitsch. It’s a remnant of the postwar optimism and whimsy that shaped Southern California in the 1950s.

A San Diegan will lead the way for ten Randy’s locations to open across San Diego, starting January 2023.

Emilio Tamez, who owns Taqueria Revolucion in San Diego and is a co-founder of Sadie’s Hand-Crafted Ice Cream in Bonita, is the lead developer behind the project. He expects the first of the ten new locations to open in Serra Mesa’s Stonecrest Plaza in early January 2023.

The chain will feature the same selection of homemade, classic donuts and bagels that locals love. The shop will offer a variety of traditional doughnuts and unique treats, like the Red Velvet, Nutella, and Fruity Pebbles donuts shown in the photo down below.

They’ll also offer iced crullers and maple doughnuts. A wide variety of coffee is also available, and they’re open all night long.

While a lot of people will visit Randy’s just for the giant donut, they also serve up an impressive menu of other classic and innovative treats that you’ll want to try at least once in your lifetime. Some favorites include glazed razed donuts, maple razed donuts, and the chocolate long john.
